Types of Massages

Introducing the 12 Types of Massages (Part 1)

When you first think of massages, what do you picture? Probably a person lying face-down in a candle-lit room, all relaxed, while a massage therapist places their soft hands on the person’s back, pressing and rubbing areas of discomfort as the sound of waterfalls crash in the background.

While that description is oddly specific, it is partially correct. The massage therapist will apply varying pressures throughout areas of a client’s body to ease tightness and discomfort within the muscles and joints. However, there are many more ways to apply pressure aside from just the placement of hands.

Let’s take a quick look at 6 different types of massages that can be particularly effective in muscle tension relief, and the unique approaches each bring to the table (no pun intended).

1. Swedish massage – Perfect for Newbies!

The Swedish Massage is a full-body massage that is most suitable for those who are relatively new to massage therapy. Swedish Massage sessions last anywhere from 60-90 minutes, where the therapist will help release muscle knots by using a combination of hand movements to target the affected area.

2. Hot stone massage – Like a comfortable Sauna on your back!

The hot stone massage is similar to the Swedish massage as it is also a full-body massage lasting 60-90 minutes, but instead, the massage therapists utilize heated stones instead of their hands that can help individuals:

  • ease muscle tension
  • improve blood flow
  • relieve pain and stress
  • promote relaxation

These hot stones are placed on different areas of the body, and sometimes, the therapist may utilize Swedish massage techniques whilst using the stone instead of their hand.

3. Aromatherapy massage – Love Essential Oils? Then this one is for you!

The aromatherapy massage is another full-body massage that utilizes essential oils which are diffused through the skin. Furthermore, the Aromatherapy massage (60-90 minutes) utilizes Swedish massage touches that can help individuals:

  • boost mood
  • reduce stress and anxiety levels
  • reduce depression symptoms
  • alleviate pain and muscle tension

4. Deep tissue massage – Comfort underneath the surface!

The deep tissue massage is another massage that is similar to the Swedish massage, being a full-body massage that lasts 60-90 minutes, and can help relieve:

  • tight muscles
  • chronic muscle pain
  • anxiety

However, it differs as the massage therapist utilizes much more pressure to reach the deeper layers of the muscle and connective tissues.

5. Sports massage – For the athletes in the house!

Sports massages are a good massage option for individuals who have had a repetitive use injury to a muscle group. These 60-90 minutes massages can actually be both full-body or area-specific, being able to help:

  • prevent sports injury
  • increase flexibility
  • improve performance
  • alleviate pain, anxiety, and muscle tension

6. Shiatsu massage – Full-body massage, Japanese-style!

The Shiatsu massage is a Japanese type of massage that can:

  • help relieve stress, anxiety, depression, and headaches
  • promote emotional and physical relaxation
  • reduce muscle tension

The Shiatsu massage is a 60-90 minute full-body massage, where the massage therapist may focus on certain area points on the body that require additional attention.
